Protests and Partisanship
When political officials in Stillwater, Oklahoma mandated mask wearing, protests and physical threats forced them to change the mandate into a recommendation. Stillwater protests were not an isolated incident, though. Demonstrations against business lockdowns and mask-wearing have occurred throughout the United States. Cheryl expressed frustration with a political environment in which an act such as deciding whether or not to wear a mask became a political statement. As businesses reopen, Cheryl explained that they walk a careful line between reopening too quickly, risking illness and lawsuits, and staying closed, frustrating consumers who side with the protestors and potentially losing customers.
The PPP loan became political. Applying for unemployment—wearing a mask has become political! I mean, it astonishes me when I go out to the grocery store for the couple items I can’t get delivered, and I wear a mask, and I have people look at me and laugh and say, “that’s ridiculous.” And it’s happened twice! It’s not a one-off. It’s happened more than once. And I’m like, “I’m not trying to be political; I’m just trying to get milk!” Everything is political now, and unfortunately, I think when it comes to finances and business, it’s going to get political, and that’s unfortunate, because I think these people are just trying to make a living.
